This new research from Robb Willer and Rachel Wetts also shows how many white Americans are so drunk on anti-black and brown animus that they will oppose welfare and other assistance programs even if white folks--the group that benefits the most--will be hurt.
There is another reality at work here. White America loves welfare for itself but not for anyone else. The United States from before the Founding to the present was built on white welfare programs. Land theft, slavery, and then the post WW2 middle class are white welfare.
Today's present "submerged state" of subsidies, tax cuts, cash payments and the like are another example of white welfare in action as well.

I remember growing up white in a virtually all-white, quite poor town, calling other white children “welfare bums” was a common insult. That said, the hatred for those folks was projection by white kids only a little better off, whose racism was even stronger.
There's a certain faction of (largely but not exclusively) White leftists who refuse to accept this well-established fact, no matter how much evidence you present. They behave like right wingers in that respect.
