So about last night... One of the most incredible experiences OF MY LIFE. Nightjars absolutely everywhere, gliding overhead, calling to one another and WING CLAPPING!!! It was so loud that it echoed.

'The act of endless motion is itself a substitute for any larger form of thought.' I have such a deep-rooted desire to keep walking at the moment. My mind has been on overdrive for months but hiking for hours stops the endless "Not good enough. Not good enough. Not good enough."

A few from a cleansing hike at the weekend. Eight miles from Blacko to Pendle Hill and back, trying to stomp out a stinking cold. I love this bloody big hill. It was wonderful to see the landscape on top looking in such great condition thanks to .

It is worth repeating - although depressing that it should be necessary. If you love gardens and gardening and have one iota of responsibility for our ecology and environment DO NOT USE PEAT! It really is that simple.

Just caught up on the peat debate on this morning's (2hr50min if you're interested). Gobsmacked. There's no justification for using peat. Ever. There are some brilliant alternatives - try and and you CAN use them to sow seed

There are alternatives to peat compost out there. I've used them and they work. All it takes is a little research and, yes, maybe a little more investment, but it's a tiny price to pay to stop the loss of an irreplaceable habitat.

Peat bogs develop incredibly slowly, by around 1mm a year, but in just 12 months machines can extract 500 years’ worth of growth. The peat bog is gone and so all the wildlife in it.

Peatlands are rare, invaluable habitats that are home to equally rare and incredibly special wildlife that NEED these wild places to survive. The large heath butterfly is extinct in Manchester because of extraction.

It was really difficult listening to Bunny Guinness promoting the use of in horticulture on just now. The world's peatlands store twice as much carbon as the world’s forests, but it isn't just about carbon.

Mitigation isn't just "Plant a load of trees and everything will be fine". Current HS2 plans will cause devastation to wildlife and their idea of compensation for nature is woefully inadequate: 'HS2 will destroy or damage hundreds of UK wildlife sites'

Dear HS2, if you think report is inaccurate why didn't you fund your own Strategic Environmental Assessment with some of your £100m budget? Why instead did you go to Court to avoid producing this? I think we all know the answer. The impacts are too appalling.
