Charlotte England’s Tweets

Squatters, solicitors & housing activists told me this is part of a trend - bailiffs, enforcement agents and security guards are out of control. We should all be seriously worried: Hired ‘thugs’ with weapons are now breaking the law to terrorise people on behalf of landlords.

“Thuggish” plain-clothed bailiffs, who would not identify themselves or say who they worked for, stormed the commercial property in east London - so flagrantly breaking the law that even the cops sided with squatters. Squatters were left heavily bruised.

NEW: A bailiff was in court today charged with a firearms offence. Police were called to an illegal eviction at an empty textile factory owned by former TORY COUNCILLOR 's family business, and found him with pepper spray and a taser.

Novara Media reporting on the growing trend of companies offering eviction services to property owners. These evictions are illegal and involve violence, but we are seeing a growth in their activities due to the complete lack of enforcement in England's wild west of a PRS.

Bailiffs with illegal weapons tried to evict squatters from a former Tory councillor’s empty factory. Cops arrested a bailiff and let squatters back in again. @CharlottEngland reports. novaramedia.com/2023/05/19/a-b

On New Year’s Eve, XR hit pause on its tactic of public disruption. As it prepares for its most ambitious mobilisation yet - getting 100,000 people to surround the Houses of Parliament - I took a deep-dive into what’s been going on behind the scenes.

Others said shoplifting was a form of resistance. Their concerns were around it being easier for some people to steal than others, & the obstacles to building solidarity between shoplifters - not the ethics of stealing. Great reporting by

Shoplifters told the cost of living crisis has pushed them to steal. “I’ve been on the verge of crying when I go to buy Sainsbury’s Basics squash & realise the price has doubled" "What has the situation come to, where I can’t afford butter?"

“Palestinian citizens can’t come out to defend the court that constantly approves their second-class status. At the same time, we can’t say, ‘get rid of it’.” Brilliant reporting by on the bind Palestinians find themselves in.

When my housing co-op was built in the 1970s, it was intended as a choice. But the rental crisis has made it increasingly difficult for people to move out, leaving us grappling with some pretty big questions. 1/2

"The cultural messaging that glorifies home as a place of relaxation, tenderness and unity might evoke a certain longing – perhaps because, for most of us, it is a fiction." An edited extract of Radical Intimacy's chapter on 'home' in !

From going undercover as a luxury property investor to a thorough survey of experiments in living, past and present, I really, really enjoyed 's investigation into what is 'home', and how we make it in a housing crisis.

Asylum seekers in Whitechapel & Greenwich were so relieved to be offered accommodation in London. But the incompetence of the HO/ outsourcing companies means dozens were sent to a hotel that doesn’t have space for them & are now spending the night outside in the freezing cold.

Another day, more chaos and inhumane treatment of asylum-seeking people thanks to Home Office, Clearsprings, hotels they subcontract to. Earlier people were made homeless. They’ve been waiting for housing outside a hotel in the freezing cold alongside mattresses for 8 hours now.

Questions remain about standard & capacity of hotels. I'm hearing that some men were taken to a hotel in Shepherd's Bush only to be left in the street for hours because there wasn't space inside. Others are being put 3 to a room. Still good news, but situation worth monitoring.

BREAKING: Asylum seekers in Tower Hamlets have now all been offered accommodation in London!

It's now a stand off in both Greenwich & Tower Hamlets. 2 groups of 30+ asylum seekers are refusing to move to isolated, unsafe accommodation outside London. The HO isn't offering any alternative. Buses have come and then left empty several times now. novaramedia.com/2023/03/21/mor
