I'm appalled that yesterday on Radio 4, the Universities Minister Michelle Donelan explicitly stated that Holocaust denial would be protected under new campus free speech proposals. Today, I raised a Point of Order in the house: Holocaust denial should never be protected speech.

  2. I can't imagine how terrifying it must be for civilians in one of the most densely populated areas on earth, under the level of bombardment we are seeing. Utterly heartbreaking. Praying for the cycle of violence to end and for a negotiated political solution for peace.

Racism is unacceptable under any circumstances. Sadly, we have a toxic Conservative government with a hostile agenda against people of colour. We don’t beat racism by being racist towards people we disagree with. I am proud of my heritage so should everyone.

  6. This tweet is grim, as is the fact that Beckett is responsible for the waste of circa £2.5m of Unite members' subs fighting a pointless legal case against Anna Turley that could've been better spent fighting workplace & institutional racism, and for members at risk of deportation

  7. Good thing pubs are allowed to welcome back punters indoors from Monday, looks like we've all got some work to do! 🍻 On a serious note, this is why the inquiry is so important- it's clear the sector will need ongoing support, help us help you and take part!

  10. There's all sorts of arcane rules and procedures that govern how Parliamentary debates work and how the Speaker can respond to this sort of intervention- his remarks here were very powerful, even if their significance may not be obvious to people who aren't procedural nerds.

  11. I want to be very clear given some unfair criticism of Mr Speaker in the replies/quote tweets that in my view he went further than necessary in supporting me here- both in allowing me to make the Point of Order and his unequivocal statement on the abhorrence of Holocaust denial.

  12. I met with this evening to relay my concerns about the proposed new legislation, and to call for it to be explicit in any Bill that Holocaust denial (and denial of subsequent genocides in Darfur, Rwanda, Bosnia and Cambodia) will not be protected "free speech".

  13. Following my Point of Order, I was accosted outside the Chamber by a Conservative MP who said that "we should be able to debate even the darkest moments of our history". Now the Govt are furiously backpedalling over this, perhaps can ensure his MPs get the memo!

The Government’s so-called free speech bill for universities will allow Holocaust deniers to be protected and even compensated. Sign our petition to tell the Government: don’t protect Holocaust deniers:

Prayer isn't prayer if it causes you to hate yourself for being LGBT! It's actually 'Hate prayer'. It is dangerous, damaging & must be included in a bill to I know - I spent years trying to 'pray the gay away' & ended up in hospital wishing I would die
