Charlie, 2 yrs ago I was looking to go work in County Corrections....I was told "off the record, you have all the skills & expereince, you are just the wrong color". how is that for merit?

Did you spell like this on the application? (Because that may have also been a factor.)
-
ohhhh someone who goes for insults....FYI, Im on twitter not writing a report & I DO work for the STATE. Have for almost 20. But lets not argue education, we can argue common decency ~ of which you lack
-
I’m both decent and grammatically correct. That’s just how I roll.
-
If you have anything further to add, take it off Charlie's thread.
-
And he identifies as a feminist...oops I started a sentence with ‘and’...hope he doesn’t send the police after me

-
That’s not illegal. In fact, it’s a grammar myth to suggest a sentence can’t begin with “but” or “and.” It might be considered informal. But it’s not wrong.

Take it from my point of view. Whenever I get a job I never know if I got the job because of my experience, education, reputation, references and overall qualifications or if I got the job because I'm Native American. What it does is it put you under a microscope as those around
-
you tend to jump on any mistake as proof of affirmative action where whereas with someone else it is just seen as a mistake. So you always have to prove yourself when all you want to do is your job. I've actually had people come up to me and praise me for doing a good job
-
Why does it seem like it is an issue? Because I'm not doing my job any differently than anybody else. And it's usually said with surprise in the person's voice. Why don't we just get rid of affirmative action and hire people that are qualified to do the job?

Because the goal is not actually to be a colorblind society. The goal is to give privileges to minorities based on their color
-
"Privileges". Schools have shown us that if we allow them to discriminate against women and minorities they will. This is the reason Title IX and Affirmative Action policies exist. To give individuals an opportunity to be represented. They still have to do the same work.
-
Equity looks like privilege to the historically privileged.
-
So when a high school student with much inferior test scores, GPA, extracurricular activities, etc. is selected over a better candidate because of race, that is equity? Equity of outcome is for communists.
-
Except that's not how it works.
-
It sure isn't. Before these policies, schools purposely didn't admit women or minorities...
-
Schools didn't offer scholarships to minorities or women, and schools could and did deny individuals from majoring in what they wanted(even if they qualified academically) for being a woman or minority. Are these the policies that people are saying were good?

Nope, the goal of affirmative action is to promote those who can't do it on their own merits and hold down those most qualified for the job.
