I talked to over a dozen young trans people about the ways they've had their anger policed over microaggressions, misgendering and outright transphobia.
I spoke to athletes (like @andrayayearwa) and activists (like @GavinGrimmVA, @andrewcodyadams and Corey Hyman) and more.

I was in awe of these folks, who have fought for their own humanity in the face of incredible bullshit. Testifying in court cases, in legislative chambers. Joining sports teams. And over and over I heard that they'd had to suppress their emotions when dealing with garbage.

All marginalized people have to censor their feelings in order to be "taken seriously," but for trans folk there's a gendered component. If you're femme, your anger proves you're "really" a boy. If you're masc, your anger proves being a boy has turned you into a menace.

And everyone, including non-binary folk, are always dodging gender stereotypes of one sort or another. Plus if we show too much emotion, then we're the unstable menaces the haters want everyone to think we are. So we shut it down and act calm, even when we're under attack.

It hit me really hard when Corey Hyman told me, "It's frustrating that we can't just speak our minds, when they're the ones trying to take away our rights."
