So if #GDELT says there were 649 kidnappings in Nigeria in 4 months, WHAT IT'S REALLY SAYING is there were 649 news stories abt kidnappings.

@charlie_simpson I'm not sure this is true. I think GDELT tries to identify discrete events. If not, why NumSources & NumArticles variables?

@clary_co I've worked with automated event data for 15 years. You can try to de-duplicate or divide by # of stories. But it's hard.

@charlie_simpson is it saying that, even? may be saying there are 649 sentences contained within news stories that mention kidnappings

@alexhanna @charlie_simpson It's killing me that I stopped updating my local GDELT db in January. This should be answerable.

@ahalterman @alexhanna @charlie_simpson Don't Forget that #GDELT collapses multiple mentions if it decides they're about the same event.

@ahalterman @alexhanna @charlie_simpson It's bloody difficult just to tell what #GDELT's unit of analysis really is.
