This is an extraordinary data visualization by @AnnieWaldman @A_L @ngusletter @Sean_Kev based on data from @HarvardGH @ashishkjha of various scenarios of #COVID19 spread that illustrate why we need to #FlattenTheCurvehttps://projects.propublica.org/graphics/covid-hospitals …

This lets you look up ever region of the country to see, under various scenarios, when the bed capacity would be overloaded. My home region is below. Look up yours: https://projects.propublica.org/graphics/covid-hospitals …pic.twitter.com/TdF0ICTWM2

What this shows is that spreading out the pandemic over many months and decreasing the number of people infected works. It will take load off hospitals. Let me show you how.

This is what happens to hospitals if the pandemic affects 60% of the population within 6 months. Basically, we're screwed. https://projects.propublica.org/graphics/covid-hospitals …pic.twitter.com/Rw5FMmnvVX

If, on the other hand, we can slow the spread and 20% are infected over 18 months, most regions can fare OK. https://projects.propublica.org/graphics/covid-hospitals …pic.twitter.com/XXKIGS5eZ6

There's a bunch of assumptions made to model this out. And you can read about them here: https://www.propublica.org/article/methodology-how-propublica-mapped-hospital-capacity-for-coronavirus …

But one thing I learned is that assuming 20% of adults are infected with
#COVID19 is not being alarmist, it's being conservative! Why? In any given year, 10% of the population gets the flu. And 20% of the US population got H1N1 in 2009.https://projects.propublica.org/graphics/covid-hospitals …Show this thread -
There is huge, huge variation between regions. Let's look at Seattle, the spot of the first U.S. cases. That region does not have ample bed capacity to handle a flood of patients, even in the best case scenario. https://projects.propublica.org/graphics/covid-hospitals …pic.twitter.com/w2WvYhGWhD

Minot, North Dakota, on the other hand, will do OK. https://projects.propublica.org/graphics/covid-hospitals …pic.twitter.com/3bqrADbqMJ

Should you be scared? No. But you and your elected officials should be aware and ask questions. What are elected officials and hospital leaders doing to raise capacity? How many beds are unoccupied? Ask questions, be informed. https://projects.propublica.org/graphics/covid-hospitals … -end
