Husband, father, social scientist, writer, Madisonian. Or maybe right-wing ideologue, pseudoscientist, evil. Opinions differ.

The first 3 paragraphs are a terrific encapsulation of the political transformation.https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/22/opinion/midterms-democrats-health-care.html?action=click&module=Opinion&pgtype=Homepage …

Even those first 3 paragraphs show David Brook's tired bias of drawing a line from any conservative position to bigotry.

It is the LEFT that exploits rifts in society. This is the definition of identity politics, which has been the ONLY strategy of Democrats for decades. And using the term “ethnic nationalism” is a false ploy to paint defense of national interest as racist. Wrong and wrong.

A great encapsulation only if you are watching the same movie Brooks is watching. For example, one could argue Trump's assault on red tape is making gov far more open than under Obama.

Nationalism yes. I fail to see where Trump interjects any ethnic provisos. Legal immigration is supported as far as I can tell. Is it such a bad idea to slow down the constant flux of illegal immigration, address issues for the citizens and then eventually move forward?

Terrific but wrong. Where are the immigrants and minority who support Trumpism in this narrative? I don’t see Trumpism as ethnic nationalism. I see economic opportunities. I see that America First is the only tried and true way to world peace and prosperity.

And it immediately descends into utter bullshit: "Along the way Trump has challenged America’s basic identity as a nation of immigrants. He’s challenged the American-led postwar international order."

Sorry. Those paragraphs are gross oversimplifications and thinly disguised ad hominem attacks against (essentially) half the country. Incredibly patronizing too.

P1: jobs could not come back were this not the case in whole or in part. P2: Clinton got sucked off in the Oval Office & lied about it. P3: Trump has only pursued shutting down illegal & non vettable & increasing merit based immigration. The 1st 3 paragraphs are a hallucination.

How could a party obsessed with ethnic identity politics possibly make a rational unifying argument against ethnic nationalism?

I'd question number three. That's a misguided oversimplification bordering on a very uncharitable caricature.

The post WW2 world order needs to be challenged and dismantled as a matter of urgency and national security, prosperity and stability. Especially after the end of the so called "Cold War" which was not actually all that cold really.

Brook’s idea that Trump’s ‘behavior’ is a turn off to republican voters: If that was an issue, the 1000’s turned away from his rallies (way less political people than I) wouldn’t tune in to Jumbotron’s to watch months after his election if there wasn’t something enjoyable.
