Husband, father, social scientist, writer, Madisonian. Or maybe right-wing ideologue, pseudoscientist, evil. Opinions differ.

Gary Larson retiring at 45 is a little like Mozart dying at 35. What a loss.https://twitter.com/TheFarSide_ish/status/1054369664103411712 …

Yes, but remember that he took a sabbatical, and when he came back, he wasn't as funny. Berke Breathed of "Bloom County" took a sabbatical after a serious accident, and when he returned, same thing. Genius is fragile.

The Berke Breathed example still baffles me. It was as if his brain had been scrambled. The strip wasn't just worse; it was unrecognizable and awful--in a way that made you think (this sounds crazy) that he was trying to make it awful.

Larson was the EPITOME of a deliciously bent sense of humor. I still love re-reading old Far Side panels.

Couldn't agree more. Easily the best cartoonist of all time. However I still don't get the one about "cow tools".

Coincidently the bell shaped curve for creativity peaks around 40. The high level of creativity can be extended past 40, by learning new things. I moved from inventing to writing songs & on to CAD/CNC design & back to inventing.

True, but it’s better to go out while still producing excellent work than to fade away into mediocrity... like the simpsons

I think it was good he retired instead of dragging it out too long. The Far Side in its later years saw a decline in quality.
