Carlos Lozada added,
I don’t know how to break this to you, but Robert E. Lee was a great general.
I’m not even referring to that. Trump refers to a basic fact in the Civil War — Lincoln relying on Grant to lead Union troops — as a thing that people might not know. Like, cool story, listen...
Ah. The story behind the headline. Yeah, that’s a trump thing. He gets so excited when he learns a historical fact.
I think solipsistic is to the word we're looking for. Combined with monumental ignorance about history.
I think that says more about our educational system than Trump. Most people I know don’t even know who Lee was, let alone could make a cogent argument on his martial abilities. Still, it oesn’t make them bad or stupid people.
Bad or stupid, no. Sadly ignorant, yes. The Civil War was a pivotal event in American history, Lee was a major figure in it, and knowing American history should be a big deal for Americans.
As a nephew of 14 great-uncles who fought for the Union and Abolition, and well as a descendant of abolitionists who took part in Bleeding Kansas, I cannot agree more.
