I’m not even referring to that. Trump refers to a basic fact in the Civil War — Lincoln relying on Grant to lead Union troops — as a thing that people might not know. Like, cool story, listen...
Ah. The story behind the headline. Yeah, that’s a trump thing. He gets so excited when he learns a historical fact.
And assumes no one else knew it...
I think solipsistic is to the word we're looking for. Combined with monumental ignorance about history.
I think that says more about our educational system than Trump. Most people I know don’t even know who Lee was, let alone could make a cogent argument on his martial abilities. Still, it oesn’t make them bad or stupid people.
Bad or stupid, no. Sadly ignorant, yes. The Civil War was a pivotal event in American history, Lee was a major figure in it, and knowing American history should be a big deal for Americans.
As a nephew of 14 great-uncles who fought for the Union and Abolition, and well as a descendant of abolitionists who took part in Bleeding Kansas, I cannot agree more.
Well sorta
Most of the time. Too offensive-minded. If he'd done 1864 from the beginning, it would have been a problem. (Civil War theory in 280 characters)
Agreed, his reputation was even more powerful
Slavery would have been abolished in the South soon enough without a civil war, which was fought to preserve the Union & POWER of the state, which, in my view, has not served Americans nor the world well:https://twitter.com/rogerahicks/status/1008227827945213952 …
Lozada so very much wants to sound reasonable when it's snark.
As were Rommel and Hannibal. Recognizing that doesn’t entail believing they were on the right sides.
But Dr. Murray we’re not supposed to acknowledge that. We took all of his statues down. That means he was a racist mongoloid.
As one should come to expect, the quote was taken entirely out of context. It was ultimately a tribute to Grant. What I take from the whole thing is that the press and the most histrionic critics of Trump (yet I repeat myself) are completely dishonest and inaccurate.
Fair point but the young man is apparently Peruvian in some meaningful way so we should prolly defer to his no doubt heartfelt and visceral connection w/ the civil war.
Perhaps the writer mistakes Robert for Charles Lee of the battle of Monmouth? Not so great. (OTOH retreats *are* hard to manage.)
So was Benedict Arnold. But no American President is likely to call him “ great.”
Also a traitor.
