Husband, father, social scientist, writer, Madisonian. Or maybe right-wing ideologue, pseudoscientist, evil. Opinions differ.

    Charles Murray Retweeted Jordan Goldstein

If a college knows it's going to have to spend thousands of dollars on security, it is a reason (or a good excuse) not invite a speaker who's attracting protests. Heckler's veto doesn't occur just in the lecture hall.https://twitter.com/JB_Goldstein/status/1045272591169212416 …

    Charles Murray added,

    Jordan Goldstein @JB_Goldstein
Claiming that freedom of expression isn't imperiled on campuses belies many student and faculty experiences. If you swim with the stream, it seems like everything is great. If you swim against it, you understand the problem. The biggest problem is self-censorship out of fear. https://twitter.com/ConversationCA/status/1045121854070050816 …

There was no controversy at IU (that I am aware of) about the $6,771.39 for the 29 IU police officers allowing you to speak. There were officers from other departments so the cost was higher but nobody complained here.

Indiana was great. But remember that I was already booked to speak at Indiana before l'affaire Middlebury & hence before Indiana knew that I'd need security. Now universities know going in that me speaking means both big bucks for security plus campus controversy. Who needs it?

I'm startled to hear this from you. After your experiences I'd think you'd be more on the side of protecting freedom in practice, not just in theory. Once the practice becomes impossible, the theory is just some pretty words.

Just stating a fact. It's one thing for Harvard to pay for security. It's another matter for an ordinary college (not one of the rich ones) to do so.

I suppose that's true. I re-read your original tweet and I agree - the heckler's veto happens not only when people get shouted down but when they never get invited at all because of security costs. I think I had mis-read it before.

Expulsion and, if relevant, criminal charges would end the threat in a fortnight. But they want the mobs to shut people down. Mobs are often a tool of the elite.

The solution is, of course, to expel the source of the security threat.

They have to spend thousands on security because the mob doesn't like something. Mob rule.

You think things are bad now? In 20 years those with any kind of political views right of center are going to be jailed, or worse. And your books, as well as those of many others, will be burned. You got off easy, Charles.

If that same college has spent the last 20 years telling students what to think & encouraging them to become violent fascists if anything challenges that cultural marxist thought, then any security payment is just a cost of business
