Didn’t Victoria Gillick oppose all that?

Yes. She lost. That's why it's called 'the Gillick Ruling' or Gillick. Even now welfare profs are protected in law from 'incitement/aiding etc' charges re underage sex on the basis of it Sexual Offences Act 2003 s. 73 https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2003/42/section/73 …

And another thing. Girls were demanding to go into voluntary 'care' because they knew they'd get more 'freedom'. That was a Children Act 'rights' thing too. Parents were powerless and the system colluded with the self-exploited, ruining their lives.

But it also has to be said that some of these kids had appalling family backgrounds and were adept at 'manipulating' the system to what they perceived to be their advantage.

It’s tragic. I’m a mum and granny and it makes me so angry that children haven’t been protected.

Yes. There are multiple causes and misadventures. But by and large it's not a binary 'victim-perpetrator' set-up. Those most influential in the slide are often peers. The 'heavy end' stereotype is not typical. And many have abusive white boyfs from way back who don't get prosecuted

I’m old enough to remember in my working-class community that it would have been your Dad who would have sorted out any boyfriend who tried to abuse you. No police would have been involved.

The 'dads' are often hard to find alas. These are mostly broken families with broken histories.

The working class suffers most from family breakdown. One of the main reasons I left the Labour Party was their positive promotion of single-parenthood. This has been disastrous for poor families.

You're absolutely right. This was what
@charlesmurray was saying in the 80s and only a few listened (including Field, Willetts and Holman). His message was omerta at the time.2 replies 0 retweets 0 likes
Thanks for remembering. A long time ago. Much chortling/scoffing at my failure to understand that England was different from the US.
