  2. At a moment when Coronavirus is generating the most concern among global threats to US wellbeing it is worth comparing: CDC Global Health budget: $0.43bn Total US contributions to WHO: $0.51bn Pentagon budget: $686.1 bn

25-54 y/o women's labor force participation is basically back to where it was in 2000. US women's LFP had been declining since 2000 while it was rising in other countries. It's looking like that the puzzling decline in women's LFP was really just about labor market slack...

Like New Zealand wine 🇳🇿🍷? Thank migrants NZ wine industry credits migrants with their rise to NZ's 6th largest export - another example of how migrants grow the economy and create (rather than take) jobs

  7. In the UK, zebra crossings are all moving walkways like they have at the airport. It’s just an optical illusion that you think you step across them.

  9. .... I think many wars are about resources but Iraq wasn’t, he thinks the reverse. Also (my take) he wants a book about the moral failings of US militarism, I wrote one about the effectiveness of the DoD in promoting US national security.

  10. Some of the reason David Swanson doesn't like Close the Pentagon is about tone. But he also doesn't like that I (more than Pinker to be fair to ) think resource dependence is a cause of violence...

A 4-year-old in Colorado died from flu this week. Days before, his mom reached out to Facebook's biggest anti-vaxx group. Members told her not to take the Tamiflu a doctor had prescribed, but give him oils and elderberries and put potatoes in his socks.

  14. Sweden claims it is the first country to have adopted a feminist foreign policy. I'm sure it would be the last country to support excluding girls from educational opportunities simply because they are pregnant.

  15. And Sweden's Peter Eriksson even went to Tanzania to have "“Good discussions on girls’ right to education and how to make it possible,” as he put it. He must be sorely disappointed the isn't helping Tanzania do that.

  16. Let's not forget Norway. As minister Dag-Inge Ulstein put it so well: "For millions of girls around the world, ... [educational] opportunities... are nothing but a distant dream.... This is not only a betrayal of their human rights, it is also a waste of resources."

  17. And of course Canada, with its own feminist foreign policy. Minister Gould's tweet didn't include a caveat about pregnant girls, nor should it have.

  18. Frankly, it would be a complete shock if the European Executive Directors weren't lock step in demanding changes to this loan. Hard to see a clearer attack on the rights and dignity of pregnant girls in Tanzania than shunting them off to "parallel education centers"

  19. & of course Jean-Yves Le Drian, French Minister of Foreign Affairs, spearheading his Feminist Foreign Policy to "fight for the equality, rights & dignity of girls and women everywhere... working to ensure that both girls and boys around the world get better access to education."

  20. To say nothing of Dr Gerd Müller, Germany's Federal Minister, who has declared "Education is a basic human right for everyone and an essential foundation for all forms
 of development cooperation!"
