Great first step in the process of making all public transit free. Don't let them water this down, Charles. You've got a good one here.

I would love to see this. I am a DCPS educator and I commute by Metro to work everyday. I am on the SmartTrip plan, but it is still expensive to use Metro to get to work. I am also a Ward 6 constituent. I commute everyday from Ward 6 to Ward 1.

@charlesallen I know it’s counterintuitive but it would be smart to open this benefit to all incomes. We want high income people to ride Metro out of principle. Few will take the benefit but some will, which is good. Socioeconomic diversity is good for transit systems. -
This proposal is for all DC residents. Not means tested. But there is also a new Fund created that dedicates new money to better bus service for the lower-income communities that need it most.

Councilmember Allen, please let @DCBRWA know how we can support this legislation. This is a great idea for workers but this legislation should have provisions for guaranteed late night hours as well...

Can I opt out and throw my subsidy back in the pool for those who need it more?
-
Sure, you don’t have to sign up for the benefit. But I hope everyone will. Public transit isn’t for “others” - it’s for everyone. Let’s treat it and invest in it, like the public good it has to be.
