Why? Because as we focus on successful reentry & rehabilitation, we need programs like YME that teach, counsel, support, & empower these individuals before they come home to understand their responsibility to now heal the harm done.

The testimony I heard was incredibly powerful. Folks didn’t hold back - talking directly about the mistakes they’ve made, but also about their deep desire to repair damage and break devastating cycles of violence & trauma they both experienced & caused.pic.twitter.com/KzNg8953vj

I also heard something you don’t often find inside a jail or when talking with someone facing a long sentence - hope. The YME program is giving hope to change lives, hope they will come home one day, and hope they can add something positive to the story of their own lives.pic.twitter.com/iVnW0oq4bG

The mentors for this program are mostly individuals sentenced from the 80s & 90s, when the approach to sentencing was very different. Thru progressive changes (i.e. IRAA) we’re giving people a chance to petition their terms be amended and a judge to evaluate their rehabilitation.

I frequently talk about working to make DC a safe & just city. This historic hearing hit on both. Efforts like YME can help improve the outcomes for someone returning home from jail/prison - jobs, housing, supports, recidivism. When they succeed, the whole city wins.

Thanks. I've met with women in our jail previously via other programs & the DCRAN. It's a priority to stay connected with them as well and we focus on their needs too. During the YME conversation, many of the men spoke on behalf of women incarcerated as well.
