Shower thought of the day: of the three most popular desktop operating systems, Ubuntu is the only one that didn't stop incrementing the major version number at 10.

Adding a pipe operator to Python. I don't know whether to be amused by this, or horrified, or both. But it's still kinda cool.

As of Chrome 68, the Chrome URL bar is now wrong about every Debian and Ubuntu HTTP package repository mirror. (The packages are signed and won't install if they were tampered with.)

Meanwhile, all your standard troubleshooting tools like dig, ping, etc show everything as working fine since they don't drop privs for their networking code

Note to self: apt stops working, even when run as root, if you accidentally change the mode of /etc/resolv.conf to 0600

This afternoon I cloned another OOK remote, the Eco-Worthy motor controller that drives my truck's HF screwdriver antenna. My watch now drives the antenna tuning! USRP recordings and a URH project at in case you'd like to play with them. 35/n

On second though, DoH only adds security, not privacy. A MITM can still see which sites you visit over HTTPS due to SNI. I still think we need better DNS, not this caveat-laden workaround.

It's great that Mozilla is trying to enhance privacy and security. However, DNS-over-HTTPS also skirts local network policies that might be in place for very good reasons. This is going to Majorly Break Things for people on corporate or DIY home networks.

That first install was particularly painful, too... I had to download 34 floppy images over dialup, copy them over one at a time to reused AOL disks, find out 1/4 of them were bad, copy again, find out some of *those* were bad too, etc, etc.
