    Western contempt for the material (contra Japanese animism) is from Augustine via Descartes. Especially contemporary religious traditions endorse pan-en-theism.

    contemptus mundi - including women, body, and sexuality - is an inheritance from Augustine - one that many traditions in Judaism and Christianity emphatically do not endorse, FWIW.

    For better and for worse, the secularization thesis - religion will disappear in the face of reason and science - _has_ come unravelled in the past 30-40 years, though partly as more individualized "spirituality" emerges. Complicated ...

    Western traditions are more complex than this, e.g.:Jeremy Stolow, _Deus in Machina_ as a start. Then look at how Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions learn to appropriate / be reshaped by new technologies, e.g. Digital Religion studies.
