If the UK government has overspun the new variant story to justify Boris Johnson's latest U-turn, and it results in all national borders closing to the British on the eve of Brexit, he really will have excelled himself

This year my three biggest freelance clients dried up. So it's been tough. If you'd like, please consider subscribing to my Patreon—there are tiers for every budget and tons of bonus content. It would be a big help and I'd be so grateful.

Asia's pandemic response has transformed the image of Asian governance -- esp when compared to the poor responses in Europe and the U.S. But will the pandemic transform Asia's governments as well? V good by in

1/This was one of the hardest pieces I’ve reported. Despite precautions, multiple sources were detained/extensively questioned. A very pro-China Hui Muslim, had his phone tapped bc he is son of a Sufi leader. It speaks to how closely China now watches the religious community.

One day people will look back at this moment and wonder why we allowed our “leaders” to care more for the health of capital and shareholder return, than people.

The United States has by far the highest per-capita healthcare costs in the world, but is not in the top 30 for either high life expectancy or low infant mortality.

This is what happens as healthcare systems reach capacity and become overwhelmed Once this happens they collapse from the overburden of patients. We have seen this before- NY, Italy, Spain, China We need to stop this now as cases continue to exponentially worsen.

    - It will take longer to get your x-ray, blood draws, and any other tests you need - Doctors will have more patients to take care of and are unable to spend as much time thinking about your care Normally we would be able to get backup from other areas, but not in a pandemic

    - When you come to the Emergency Room you are going to wait much longer because doctors and nurses are busy trying to manage all the patients - You may have to stay in a bed in a hall (if you are lucky) - Nurses will be further stretched and have less time to tend to you

I want people to understand what we mean when we say that hospitals are at "capacity" - That means there are no more beds for patients - If you are in a trauma and need care there is not a bed - Your elective surgery cardiac cath, or biopsy is will be postponed

Important to keep in mind COVID’s low mortality rate is only when the medical system has not collapsed. In cases hospitals are overwhelmed and people are being told to stay home and die, it is much higher.
