Fun fact: some people have an internal narrative and some don't As in, some people's thoughts are like sentences they "hear", and some people just have abstract non-verbal thoughts, and have to consciously verbalize them And most people aren't aware of the other type of person

I think I have it too but haven’t been diagnosed. I didn’t know anyone actually pictured things mentally until watching a TED talk by Temple Grandin with my husband. I thought everyone’s internal processes were word-based.

My husband’s more visually based, and he can remember things from much earlier in his childhood than I can. All my memories are basically stories I’ve told myself, so I can only remember things from after I learned to construct narratives.

I'm (late dx) Autistic who thinks (almost) in pictures & I wasn't able to 'read' until someone said 'imagine the words as pictures'
it's so weird how for (majority) of us, metaphors 'saves' by being taken *literally* &/or becoming a 'symptom' of something

I have anphantasia, too, this video explains it so well, I test my friends all the time! (Behind my eyelids is pure black, I remember what things look like but can't picture them. And I also have a running monologue in my brain, mostly anxiety.)https://youtu.be/ewsGmhAjjjI

Yeah. I just found out about this. My mom would say,"Picture in your mind X. Do you see it" I just sort of nodded and said yes thinking she meant thinking about it. I forgot about that, but then a year or so ago someone mentioned they didnt see things, and I realized that was me

This just blew my mind! I thought it was a metaphor for concentrating. I didn’t actually know you could mentally visualize something. I can render stuff in my mind and figure out how things go together by like shapes but definitely didn’t know this was a thing until right now.

Yeah, I struggle with mental images too. I see it as a literary thing, like it’s a description and i can understand it but i can’t *see* it. I do, by contrast, have suuuuper vivid and image heavy dreams. So who knows?
-
Oh and i can lucid dream. But that usually feels to me like I’m a director or something - so it’s not about changing images but changing, i guess, the “Script”

I was trying to explain this about me a while back, I didn't even know it had a name. Never met anybody who had the same thing. Made therapy etc hard as I just switched off whenever visualisation was mentioned.
