thought it was line a bit of techno-evolutionary cruft leftover from the linefeed limit of a pdp-11 terminal?

that sounds right, just saying there's one valid reason left to cling to it

code readability suffers when you’ve got 32 levels of indent and 500 characters on a line. (Yes, I have worked with code like this). While 80 is a bit antiquated thesedays, going beyond 120 or so is generally a bad idea imo.
-
proliferating indent levels are extremely bad, i don't think line limits are the way to make people stop doing them is all, mostly because it doesn't work, they'll just write their code in a 5 character wide column you're not super wrong, i just like to advocate extremism
-
I don’t advocate a hard limit, but I do advocate people putting effort into making their code readable on an average display with an average font. I dislike the connotations of the word “code” — you shouldn’t need to “decode” it to read it.

Slightly OT: Thanks to advanced age, cannot bring myself to use "coder" in place of "programmer" but, aware the latter is an uncoolness tell, always say "developer" unless someone truly warrants "engineer"

not a bad way to navigate the forest of shibboleths

When the api has class names that are 15+ chars long, variable names that are 15+ chars long, functions that are 15+ chars, and often take take 4+ arguments? Just unreasonable fam.

Having scrolled literally dozens of pages on a 1080p monitor because my IDE doesn't support line wrapping, I can only conclude: You're the prick responsible for this.
-
i mean, not for nothin' but that's a pretty bad IDE you got there

Meanwhile, I am still mad about having to do this 18 years ago: if condition { statement statement };

line-length limits are so I can open two or three columns in my emacs at once and not have it do that ugly-ass autowrap
