Are "Post Unpopular Opinions" threads about: - finding the walls of your echo chamber? - encouraging naive outgroup members to expose themselves? - providing a formal justification to make ingroup-divergent claims, thus asserting your status if your thread is seen as legitimate?

- letting off steam for some reason i'm reminded of Johnny Carson's final Tonight Show, in which he nibbled the hand that fed him with the most exquisite gentleness

why might expressing unpopular opinions publicly "let off more steam" than doing so privately?

fwiw I meant "privately" as in "to a friend or two, offline" but I agree -- there seems to be a distinction between "publicly witnessed" and "witnessed only by close friends or even nobody" does this have to do with the romantic "authenticity" quest? desire to show True Self?
