There's a board on SomethingAwful that hates my guts (also the guts of Scott Alexander and various similar dastardly blackguards) but they haven't had the nerve to start anything with me in years.

These people are bullies and cowards. It's a cliche, but it's true -- they'll come sniffing around and make a few tentative feints, but they only commit to an attack if the target shows fear or weakness. Mock them firmly and loudly and they fade away.

There's some value in having the power to simply not give a shit if they do or not, but I admit it requires either strong OPSEC, a fey willingness to lose a few things, or a close-knit social circle. Possibly all of them.

yeah, it seems like to a great extent the whole process is effectively a punishment for wanting or needing their approval. if it isn't obvious how to hurt you, there are lots of more fun, softer targets to be had

the main ways to be vulnerable are to be low-status members of their communities, which arguably makes the punishment fit the crime, and to be nymous and employed, which kinda feels more unfortunate
