The semantics of our color coding are a mess, so I'm wondering: In Caves of Qud, what does a purple monster mean to you? What do you expect it to mean?
it means a boss, except when it means one of the types of scrub who are colored magenta inexplicably, usually in contradiction of their written description

chaos you get the advanced follow-up question: what qualifies as a boss???
-
a boss is a monster (intended to be most likely fought, not dealt with peacefully) that's either a named instance of a scrub class that has improved stats (and often an entourage of the scrub class) or a unique individual of exceptional difficulty calling for special tactics
-
Blurfnoggle the Dead Sexy Snapjaw Breakdancer is a boss, Saad Amus is a boss, esper assassins have boss-like qualities but don't have proper boss feel so they're probably minibosses
-
what your saying is not wrong, but I have feelings about the game making judgements re: what's intended to be fought vs. dealt with peacefully
-
*nodnod* it's especially great that that's a completely probabilistic evaluation in CoQ given that the player could have made friends with any faction
-
also the combo breaker for my definitions are legendary merchants, who are definitely bosses and definitely not intended to be fought it might be nonsensical for them to be magenta and for Barathrum not to be (could also apply to Otho)
-
the working semantics are "unique + generated" but there are exceptions that I'm trying to unpack (Slog, Mamon). Basically it's doing double work to 1) signal that this thing is unique and generated and 2) signal that you should pay attention to this thing on a noisy battlefield
-
imo it's bad to signal "generated" maybe "pay attention on noisy battlefield" could be something similar but distinctive (color cycling between magenta and violet?)
