if I didn't care for Use of Weapons and hated Excession, what Culture novel should be my last attempt to get into the series?

Player of Games is really good, if you don't like that then you probably won't like the series.

it's the one with the boardgame champ who's sent to a brutal alien empire that uses a boardgame as their imperial exam

yeah that's the one you start with, somebody fucked you up starting you with Use of Weapons, TPoG is the shit Zuckerscorn Carambanude is in Use of Weapons (with a cameo elsewhere)

if TPoG manages not to fail you then read Surface Detail, and if you're still feeling good about it then read Matter and quit while you're ahead or maybe exit the Culture sequence for Against a Dark Background, under no circumstances read Consider Phlebas or Look to Windward

I tried to read that but the main character is a miserable bastard who hates being the most awesome person in the universe, treats everyone with contempt, and yet the other characters think he’s charmingly incorrigible and don’t beat him with sticks, as he deserves.

definitely don't read Transmetropolitan

I loved Transmet! I just couldn’t stand how the Player or Games guy sat around moaning how bored he was while ignoring the plot. If he couldn’t be bothered to get on with the story, I couldn’t be bothered to keep reading.
