i'm not convinced that calling able-minded people "retard" demeans people who are retarded. the content of a slur changes with context. i interpret its ideal usage like this: if an able-minded person acts in a way that is "slow", it is bad qua that person to act in such a manner

more specifically, to prefer that people who have ability utilize their abilities to their best capacities. when i call someone 'a fucking retard/idiot/etc', i'm pointing out that they are underutilizing the abilities they already possess.
