But in terms of cost efficiency it appears - solar or thermal > nuclear > coal > wind > hydroelectric

Not to mention; noting that since a lot of them are arranged in such a way that shading even a part can greatly reduce the output -- >http://blog.aurorasolar.com/shading-losses-for-pv-systems-and-techniques-to-mitigate-them/ …

Ah I am proposing massive desert installations and HVDC lines to coastal cities. Totally different. Economies of scale will beat rooftop solar on bulk pricing, installation, conversion, and maintenance costs by far, though transmission costs can be higher.

PV is definitely winning at this point.

But PV is much more inefficient/unreliable whereas Solar-thermal much more reliable but expensive. PV has high support costs/installation costs.

Hmm I'm not seeing that. https://www.google.com/search?safe=off&q=cost+per+watt+solar+thermal+vs+photovoltaic … My reading is somewhat the opposite, but solar thermal provides a smoother output apparently. Recommendations currently suggest using both. http://www.bine.info/en/topics/energy-generation/power-plants/news/solarthermie-und-photovoltaik-kraftwerke-im-vergleich.pdf …

Note I'm assuming no storage, just building enough to fit under the peak load curve.

Esp. PV has a disadvantage relative to CSP if storage is needed.

But for raw power, PV beats CSP by like a factor of 3-4 on pricing. http://analysis.newenergyupdate.com/csp-today/markets/csp-expensive-or-viable-investment … Tbh it also beats coal and oil and is beginning to surpass gas. Wind is the only thing comparably cheap at this point.
