No, and I'm sad to hear this take; 4 was, by a vast amount, the best-balanced, best-designed D&D to ever come out. BECMI comes close, but everything else goes from Bad to Terrible.

The shittiness of a D&D edition can be trivially gauged by how much it embraces "Magic does everyone else's job, as well as its own;" 4's defining sin for grogs is that non-casters got to actually do things.

you're evaluating the editions in terms of the relative balance between classes. I disagree with this rubric. 4ed is a travesty specifically because it assumes players want to and are capable of running their tabletop game as if it was a computer game.

its the most munchkin'd out edition by an enormous margin. it more or less tunnel-visions playgroups into combat oriented encounters because it is so painstakingly combat stats oriented. tabletop combat is very boring compared to vidyo.

because I'm curious, how do you rate World of Darkness "fistful of d10s" rule system?

The math is bad, very bad. It's very difficult for a ref to assess the relative difficulty increases of changing the TN for success, changing the minimum # of successes needed, or docking dice from the pool to be rolled.

ahh, now i'm remembering sweet, sweet Shadowrun, where a +1 target number modifier doubled difficulty if your target number happened to be five and had absolutely no effect on difficulty if your target number happened to be six

Shadowrun's favorite rules artifact for me was crossbows using the STR stat for damage and being aircraft-mountable and dirigibles having a STR stat meaning crossbow batteries on airships being a legit doomsday weapon
