Peterson oscillates between exasperated tradcon and insightful synthesizer of 20C philosophy and psychology. You may have encountered the former, as that tends to get sound-bited for media distribution.
-
yeah, i got Jordan "what the SJW is trying to do in this situation is avoid formulations that in the past have been used to harm vulnerable people, and that's why we need a panopticon government to regulate everybody's genitalia" Peterson
-
The sound-bite problem is a big problem. It also doesn't help that his accent codes as "yokel" or "Boreal redneck" to a lot of people
-
i mean, sound-biteitis isn't exactly solely a problem other people are inflicting on himhttps://twitter.com/chaosprime/status/966009432499990528 …

You're right and he makes mistakes, particularly when he forgets that most of his audience is non-charitable. I also think he's internally conflicted re: his authoritarian tradcon preferences and his principled libertarian intellectual positions.
-
well, i can certainly extend him some compassion in the matter of conflicted priorities

I wouldn't go so far as to call him a hack, but I do consider some of his ideas "poison to the mind" of those who could benefit from a less dystopian approach. He offers no solutions/provides reasons for his viewers to blame anyone from parents to society for being un-enabling.
-
He literally just wrote a self-help book with solutions like "be precise in your speech" and "assume that the person you're listening to might know something that you need to know. become a better listener".
-
Look, I disagree with Peterson on a lot of stuff and don't mean to be a public defender of him. the man is human and has plenty of flaws, and he sometimes comes across like a jack-ass because of his personality. He's not a villain though. He's just a tradcon.
-
I am saying that because he is a flawed human being and is smart enough to realize it, I would expect for some one like him to realize the impact of his words. I would not call him a villain, perse. I do consider harmful, the often very personalized claims he sells as "the way".
