find it funny that "qualia" is a really popular term among rationalists despite how most of them think consciousness is an illusion like, qualia were introduced as a philosophical argument against that kind of dismissal

many many rationalists i.e. lesswrong adjacent people Daniel Dennett as a philosopher also thinks this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consciousness_Explained … imo most of them fundamentally do not understand what the Hard Problem of Consciousness means or have a different internal definition of qualia

also i don't mean this in a mean or dehumanising way but I have a paranoid suspicion that perhaps p-zombies really do exist and it's hence utterly logical for a p-zombie without qualia or internal experience to conclude that those things cannot exist

i think the way you get to "consciousness is an illusion" is that you fully identify your consciousness with the part of yourself that talks to itself in words and then conflate *that* with its own perception of control, which is in fact an illusion

i.e. start as the kind of sad sack who thinks Mister Spock had a consistent and superior epistemology and ethos, keep doing that harder and harder for a while, then smack all unwilling into a couple actual results of neurology

Which is also completely missing the important elements of mysticism and contemplative practice in Vulcan culture and focusing narrowly on Spok's performance on the bridge

weird how few of these jokers seem to think Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations is a pinnacle value
