A lot of conservatives think ethical non-monogamy is all about maximizing pleasure. I think it's much more about living honestly and sustainably. Iti's about not trying to fit a round peg into a square hole. Because that often fails, and when it does, the results are traumatic.

I'd say it's a distinction without a difference; living honestly and sustainably in ways that avoid traumatic results of failing to fit into a structure *is*, in fact, maximizing pleasure. But then, I don't think 'maximizing pleasure' is anything to look askance at.

usually that's regarded as Epicurean hedonism, minimizing suffering rather than maximizing pleasure whereas people continually have a bad attitude about Cyreniac party-til-you-puke hedonism that's specifically about maximizing pleasure

I think I don't see the distinction very clearly; suffering very clearly gets in the way of pleasure and increasing pleasure without minimizing suffering runs into diminishing returns pretty dang fast! Also, puking is unpleasant so it seems maximally hedonic to stop before that.

as someone with limited exposure to the greek classics, am I just reinventing all this shit, basically?

oh, probably, you seem to be doing a good job of it though so why stop now besides, reinventing the wheel is the only way to really learn about why wheels are the way they are if you don't want to just use wheels somebody else provided for you all the time
