"Great minds think alike" is a useful phrase for casual conversation but false as a general observation about the world. Smart people are scattered across any intellectual spectrum that you can think of and frequently disagree with each other.

i like the use of 'gutter' specifically in the bowling sense -- a channel that imposes an inescapable direction, because I've seen outstanding minds trap themselves in cognitive canyons that they then barrel down, impervious to outside influences.
