Not sure what word is most appropriate, but wasn't it supposed to repel water on missiles originally?
-
was it? i hadn't heard about an origin with missiles, neat
-
Yeah the wd stands for water displacement, 40 cos it was the 40th attempt of the formula. Not
on the missile bit tho, gonna Google that a bit -
The spray, composed of various hydrocarbons, was originally designed to be used by Convair to protect the outer skin which comprised the paper-thin balloon tanks of the Atlas missile from rust and corrosion From the wiki

It's definitely not a lubricant tho, even if it can sometimes be used as such
-
the few things ive needed it for in life were lubricating car parts and fixinv squeaky doors.
-
You'd have done better to use MMO or 3in1. WD40 evaporates and flushes proper lubricants out of bearings during application.

You tell em lad
