the first was some kind of hovering camera drone that had a HAL 9000-like "eye", later on there was a giant fucking hovering spider, one or two other things i can't remember

there's a lot of ways to do that. the retinal nerve-fiber blind spot can be observed (literally a grey spot in the middle of your visual field) any time you can stop saccade movements in your eyes. all it takes is an eye patch and being dumb enough to squeeze your eyeball.
