works for every relationship interaction, too: whenever you generate an emotional punishment for the motivation to do something failing to arise spontaneously, you're taking a sledgehammer to the processes that allow it to arise spontaneously

The worst part is, it seems permanent. Whether it's a romantic partner, friend or family member, I've not yet quite figured out how to repair that damage. I've spent years puzzling over it. Yell at me for not calling enough and future calls will be tinged with obligation.
