1) Everyone knew they were fats; the supposed advantage was that they weren't SATURATED fats. Then they hydrogenated them to make them solid and created trans fats, which are far worse. 2) What this "we" shit? This was a government-and-industry fuck-up.

This is typical of a common pattern through history imo: Science finds good thing. Business picks up on it, sells it to Public. Science realizes thing may be harmful the way it's used. Business keeps mum. Bad stuff happens to Public. Backlash, rinse repeat

obviously "Science" isn't a monolithic entity and can cause problems through bad data, overenthusiasm, or just plain malice, and people and the media play a big role in it too, but, yknow, simplified and all, seems to happen a lot.
