this is the end of Patreon, though. it's a dead project walking. lots of patrons won't so much as kick up a fuss, so the corpse will stumble along for a while, but all trust has been annihilated, which means the rate of new business will never again sustainedly exceed attrition

in Patreon's game, you cannot *even once* perform a surprise, consentless rearchitecture of your fee structure to massively favor yourself at cost to the revenue providers, because now *content* providers cannot feel safe *asking* revenue providers to use your service

your content providers are your sales, marketing, and public relations team, and you just kicked the legs out from under them, irreversibly for all practical purposes. it's not actually irreversible, but the measures necessary to reverse it won't be taken, so it may as well be
