we aren't seriously comparing Roger Zelazny on his hackiest, most self-indulgent day to Bob Salvatore on his most insightful and euphonic, though, are we

Uh no definitely not. Though I've not actually read Zelazny. Carried around Lord of Light for several months and never made it beyond the first chapter.

I think the problem was trying to digest it while trying to make Buddhism work for me (which it did not, for various reasons)

What niche does Amber belong in? Is it just high fantasy with a lemon zest?

any time you want some high fantasy that has that D&D campaign feel but like, the intimidating D&D campaign at the really nice but kinda spooky store with the DM who makes his players roleplay and does research and shit, get you some of his Dragaera books

but the reason i bring him up is that Amber is written in a perspective that most of the people who read it independently wind up terming "first person smartass", which also finds itself in full flower in Steve's Vlad Taltos books (a subset of Dragaera)

also i should be careful about calling Dragaera high fantasy, because some people would absolutely call it low fantasy, since some people use high/low there to use high/low prevalence of fantastic elements and some people use it for lords 'n ladies vs. street 'n grimy
