for most of my life i regarded "y'all" as a distasteful shibboleth of an alien tribe i had enough contact with to dislike. then i learned to read classical Hebrew, which requires "y'all" in order to most faithfully translate "etchem", where "atah" and "at" are "you"

I feel like that would be more like "y'all'ouldn't'a", really. E.g., "If y'all'ouldn't'a been there we'dn't'a made it."

i can see it in that construction, but i feel like mine is more natural in "y'all'd'n't've seen my hat anywhere, wouldja"
