Mobile UI going to desktop has been such a clusterfuck. It was largely experimental there, and things weren't loved based on success of it.

People can deal with a bad UI if they like the hardware/features of the software. See: Discord. But then this rant called out... well...

Mice let you interact with any part of the display without needing to know anything special besides drag, and click. It's effective. Easy.

i don't preciiiisely agree with him but i have a lot of hatred for mice that mostly comes out of degenerate cases that develop around them

they're a good interface for spatial tasks and the kind of exploratory use you're talking about, they're incredibly bad for workflows you've gotten good at

the degenerate cases are things where a keyboard workflow is possible but so is a mouse workflow, and because the designer would *never consider* using a keyboard workflow (and probably rises to the level of being self-righteous about it) the keyboard workflow has been broken

load up web site, i've already typed my username into that box and am typing my password when the onload event fires and forces my input focus back into the username box, because if i had been relying on a mouse i would still be trying to navigate to the username box

Both of those situations do suck. Focus theft isn't even just a mouse issue. Photoshop steals focus no less than 3 times on boot.

yeah everything i'm saying is intersectory to other issues and to some extent is more informed by and habitually proximate to the mouse rather than caused by it as such
