It seems like a lot of adults who reference 1984 in arguments completely forget the real themes of the book, or never even understood them.

Pretty sure most people making references to these books today never read them at all, or skimmed the cliffs notes to do the book report.

I think I have a linguistics degree because of Nineteen Eighty Four. (Even though its Sapir-Whorfian Newspeak premise is kind of nonsense.)

it's perfectly consistent because the Sapir-Whorf premise of Newspeak isn't true, but everybody is coerced into pretending that it is
