Spite is a good starting point. But there are also real functional reasons to use two spaces. (And no good reason not to.)

@FakeUnicode The idea that wider spacing after full stop is a mechanical typewriters thing is an urban myth as well. -
The sane thing is for software to treat any number of spaces the same.
