I feel like telling a story about the tragedy of the commons. Once, in NYC, you could promote things by handing out flyers on the street.

Now, trying to get a New Yorker to take a promo flyer is like trying to get them to take a rabid porcupine made of Ebola.
-
The moral of the story is: there is no shared social agreement so trivial and innocuous that capitalism won't take a giant shit on it.

@chaosprime and the squeegee men remember them (also those CD guys are still kinda thing over here) -
@wheresmygift Where is over here? -
@chaosprime North London (Camden to be specific) -
@wheresmygift Ahh. Hey, if they haven't died out, it's because you haven't let them kill the handing-shit-out social compact. Stay strong! - End of conversation

@chaosprime Lamp post stickers and flyers have made a comeback since the early 1990s, though -
@opirmusic I didn't know stickers on everything ever left. 99% of them are a numbers-station level of cryptic, though. -
@chaosprime Compared to 91-96, they've been scarce. It used to be every pole in the EV / LES. Now I see them popping up everywhere -
@opirmusic It's always heartwarming to see a once-endangered species resurgent. -
@chaosprime My thoughts exactly. I didn't realize how fun they were until they disappeared

@chaosprime I should point out that this, um, "marketing method" was pioneered in the 60s by the Hari Krishna. -
@StevenBrust Was it now. I knew I hated them for a reason.
