maybe i'll write up something holistic formalism when things have died down and i can do it w.out feeling like i'm picking a fight or smth
@mechapoetic oh, didn't mean that. just hoping that thinking systems and agency are important will no longer be the mark of the oppressor.

@chaosprime i don't think agency is that important in games tbh! i think it's a misnomer, "acting" is more descriptive -
@mechapoetic hunh, okay. well, i'd like to read more about that. :) -
@chaosprime theater studies is a good place to go to for this -
@mechapoetic isn't that, y'know, starting from the assumptions of a medium where the choices of players are already constrained/nonexistent? -
@chaosprime you mean like games? where everything is mediated and bound inside parameters? -
@mechapoetic not to anything like the same inherent degree, surely? the guy playing Hamlet has no valid option to not stab Polonius. -
@chaosprime ok but lots of games do this, giving you limited or no options, this isn't weird in games -
@mechapoetic sure, but you can go waaaay in the other direction, too. Dwarf Fortress is no kind of scripted exercise. - 1 more reply

@mechapoetic so one can display qualities that might identify one as a dread formalist and not be understood as the crushing fist of evil. -
