@FullPresence i met a guy whose primary reading of the Culture sequence was as a deep critique of communism. who knew?

@chaosprime That is one reason; though I would call it a critique of the Soviet system. -
@FullPresence that seems like it has to be a byproduct; who'd bother going out of their way to kick *that* dead dog at this late date? -
@chaosprime Someone on the right. It isn't a dead dog either.

@FullPresence i mean, i think it is from a certain angle. at the very least it's a critique of the image of moralistic purity and such. -
@chaosprime Which seems to then be, more properly, a critique of the Right. -
@FullPresence to the extent i see that reading it's pretty even-handed, but it doesnt' feel like a condemnation to me at all. -
@FullPresence if anything i read Banks as saying that the mechanics of power are what they are, and fun is what it is, and if you want to… -
@FullPresence …build something humane you need to work with those constraints rather than pretending they don't exist. -
@chaosprime Assuming, of course, that human beings naturally seek power over others. Which I don't. -
@FullPresence i don't see that in Banks, actually. if anything, he seems to imply that humans can easily do without that behavior, but… -
@FullPresence …social systems are just incorrigible about it. - 2 more replies
