#YesAllMen need to take a hard look at what values they share with Elliot Rodger & their complicity in a culture that taught him entitlement
@katrinatraver when we say Rodger was a monster, we're saying he's Not Like Us, he's some random occurrence that's nothing to do with us.

@katrinatraver this is comforting to people because it means everything about them is okay. this is why people love stories about monsters. -
@katrinatraver but when it's *not true*, as with Rodger, whose motivations were based on v.popular ideas about masculinity, that's a problem -
@katrinatraver by just lumping Rodger in the "monster" bucket, you're dodging thinking about how masculinity fed into his atrocities. -
@katrinatraver that means that you cannot insulate your sons from those parts of masculinity, as taught by yourself or by everyone else. -
@chaosprime To me, that statement is the most dangerous. It's implications are that mothers have 0 control over their sons. -
@katrinatraver not saying that. you have plenty. saying that you can't use it effectively if you turn your face away from the problems. -
@chaosprime have even made the news. -
@katrinatraver it's not about "all males". more about what views and values go unexamined and unchallenged. - 2 more replies

@chaosprime He's not like us and should be used as a tool to teach out younger men about respect and tolerance. -
@katrinatraver he was like us. he believed that virginity is a condition of social inferiority, like most of us do. he believed that men… -
@katrinatraver …need sex to be happy, like most of us do. he believed that people being afraid of you means you're strong, as many of us do.
