when you find something that's unsayable in your social group, naturally you peel it back because you know there would be no point in making something an article of faith if it were true and it's pretty much always a "bad stuff will happen if we don't pretend this" justification

This. If you need faith to enforce anything it’s either because you haven’t done the work to prove it’s true, either because you consider others people as toddlers. Teach critical thinking at school, not religion.
