when you find something that's unsayable in your social group, naturally you peel it back because you know there would be no point in making something an article of faith if it were true and it's pretty much always a "bad stuff will happen if we don't pretend this" justification

There's so many different types of things that you shouldn't say to your friends if you want to keep having friends, including flat out lies. What category of unsayable thing do you mean? Not many people will stick around if being continually insulted for example.

Yes, but non-literal truths undergo further selective pressure over the generations and get baked into the culture. Introducing ideologies pollutes these delicate ecological niches and threatens the survival of the society. Best to stick with the small lies.
