and often it's pretty legit but sometimes the case looks shaky and sometimes it looks like bad stuff is happening because we are pretending this but it's still unsayable and one starts to wonder whether once this becomes a habit, things start evolving to exploit the habit

Counterarguments along the lines of "but if we didn't lie to Don Carleone we wouldn't have broken up a crime ring etc." are essentially errors of scale, kinda like when people expect USA budget to work the way their family bakery's budget works

There's a class of articles of faith best described as "it's true, and we can prove it's true, but it takes so long to prove that we don't want to go through the whole process again, so please don't ask" Unfortunately they're very hard to tell from the other kind
